Dear Richard, About quarter of a century ago, when I had my computing consultancy business, I looked into setting up a rack mount cabinet so I could experiment with configurations before implementing them for customers. I got hold of a couple of free redundant Compaq servers for 19" rack mounting. Then I looked at the rest of the kit I would need; cabinet, rack, cable routing, cooling, etc. And noticed the cost going up in leaps and bounds as I identified more little bits which would be needed. And then realised that of course I would want a rack-mounted ethernet switch, and a router, and a modem bridge. For a couple of free servers, the costs had become astronomical! And all for the sake of having a big ugly box in my study! I decided this must be why I was being given the two free servers, because someone else had blanched at the costs. So I passed them on to someone else, and abandoned the project. I have never regretted abandoning the dream of my own rack-mounted system.
