Your message aroused my curiosity, and a little bit of archaeology in
the source tree reveals that it has perhaps always been that way; it
certainly has been the case at least as far back as GNU Mailman's
migration from CVS to GNU Bazaar in 2003.

As you can see, the 'join' and 'leave' commands merely import the code
for 'subscribe' and 'unsubscribe'. At some point, probably in Mailman
3, the code was rewritten to reverse that association, but that makes
no difference to the end user because both commands still work.

Thus, if anyone is so inclined, one may still grant oneself the
opportunity to mispell 'subscribe'! :-)
