Not aware of anyone who have picked up the torch locally. So probably down to people like us, there are worse places to start than here. Happy to talk about the bits I know, or drag in contacts. Also really liked BSides (ala BSides Bristol), but young folk would really need someone to accompany them to BSides events as they aren't intended for young folk, but are cheap security conferences which are within range of the interested. If the industry is crying out for people to study this field, then grass roots support is needed. The industry thinks it needs such people, I suspect what it really needs are people who know how to put up IT systems in a way which doesn't fall apart too readily and are easily maintained, along with a modicum of knowledge about how attackers operate so they have a reasonable idea of what "solid" looks like. There are quite a lot of such folk, indeed most organisations whose IT doesn't stink have one somewhere, whether they get appropriate recognition for those skills is another thing.
Hi SimonThanks for this, the stem group meet on the 2nd Saturday of the month. We should have a teacher come along to the Feb event, so I can try and ask about potential interest, March there is a talk at the library about the Moon from the Torbay Astronomical society.
This is an interesting topic area, it is how we present this, I would suggest aim more at the adults, so we don't end up with load of kids thinking they are going to learn how to hack in to something.
9th April is free at the moment, so maybe we go with some ideas from April onwards, work out interest / topic from the list (if people don't mind commuting to Paignton). and take it from there.
This could be an opportunity to help people also gain a better understanding of what IS really needed out there, what the challenges are and how people can learn the required skills, what current expectations are etc. Also a reality check on how much people earn, esp if people think that this is a highly paid career path.
Lets discuss more here first. Paul
