If you're only using SATA, drives then you might find a simple USB to
SATA cable quite handy. They have a tiny chip in then; presumably they
can be so small as they only need to embed the SATA packets into USB
frames.
IDE/PATA drives are a little more demanding when it comes to power
supplies ;)
