It might be distro-independent. I've known BIOS settings that offer a "Reboot from the previous boot device" option, and if you manually boot from USB and then reboot without a USB I've seen confusion ensue. You could try manually pointing to your hard drive and see what happens.

I tend to put USB stick in again.
Start USB stick.
At end when running new distro,
I either close down byclose down inside USB stick, but wait about 5
minutes before trying to remove it.
