Dear Neil, > From what I have read it just seems to be a fancy DE. Or am I, as so > often, missing something here? I would say you hit the nail on the head here - KDE Plasma is indeed on the 'fancy' end of the spectrum! It's signature features are the desktop widgets, the extensive aesthetic customisability, and the 'krunner' search pop-up. Most other desktop environments only allow widgets on the panels, and Gnome limits these to various forms of drop-down menu. The krunner thing is pretty clever and Gnome now comes with a similar search feature. Note though that KDE is designed for and integrated with applications made with Qt, whereas Xfce uses GTK. Thus, some applications might look a bit out of place if you just install KDE Plasma, and you will have lots of extra applications installed if you add the entire KDE package. With a little bit of work you can make your existing GTK programs fit in with KDE Plasma. I have not used either KDE or Xfce for any significant amount of time so there are others here who can give a far better argument for switching to KDE than I can! That said, given how impressed I was with Xfce when I used it recently I would say KDE is not really worth the hassle unless you are installing a fresh system anyway.
