I don't know what the theory says but up until recently I was running a
powerline adapter between a room in the house and the shed which was on
a a separate spur to another consumer unit with its own RCD. So I think
it will work unless I was very lucky. I vaguely remember some stories
fro the early days about neighbours picking up powerline ethernet from
next door.
