I'd like to unpack this a little bit to add context and specificity - 
not because I necessarily disagree in any way or suspect Gordon of 
jingoism ("spirit of the blitz" blah blah blah) but because clarity is 
important.
"We" here is "the USA"*: furthermore it was a bunch of people, now 
mostly dead, in a very different USA at a very different and specific 
point in history when they had both the manufacturing capacity and the 
political will to do so. Just because the USA of then were able to 
achieve $FEAT1 - in no way comparable with the current situation - does 
in no way mean or even imply the the USA of today can achieve $FEAT2.
It's debatable if the USA of today has either the manufacturing capacity 
or the political will and the UK likely has neither - but not really by 
me as I am woefully under-qualified to do so having nowhere near 
sufficient information to form any meaningful conclusion. As is I 
suspect pretty much everyone else.

*The British designed the liberty ships, the Americans built them.
