Why did I not know that you can make soda bread without baking soda?! Every time I've tried making it something puts me off about the taste and I eventually figured out it was the baking soda itself I don't like. Baking powder + acid (lager) will do though eh? Going to try that tomorrow.
Baking powder contains an acid as well as the bicarb - usually balanced to mitigate the bitterness of the bicarb, but it's just a big scone at the end of the day.
This is sooo offtopic but any thoughts on 'faux' shop bought buttermilk vs 'real' cultured buttermilk? I was making my own in the airing cupboard from a starter for a while and it was great until I eventually got tired of baking stuff just because it required buttermilk.
I don't like it, so I don't buy it. I make 'fake' stuff with lemon juice if I ever need it, although I also make traditional buttermilk when I make... butter. (It's the whey left over)

I also have a real PDP-8/a too. I can take credit cards. Gordon -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dcglug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
