Never come across this before. On my desktop screen I have some icons

I set up my wife's laptop in the same way. Now she tells me that the
icons are being moved on her desktop screen to a new layout. Why
can't I
have them where I want them? is her question.
I have looked around, but so far failed to find any reason. There
may be
a setting somewhere that I have missed.
Any ideas please?

Neil, you've neglected to furnish us with vital details such as which
distribution you're using on each machine, which graphical environment
you've setup, and any other details that may be pertinent.
Grant.
Sorry, my only excuse is getting forgetful in my old age. The distro is
MX Linux 19, which uses xfce as the desktop manager. This is the same on
my desktop computer, my laptop, (both of these leave the icons where
they were put by me), and on my wife's laptop which is the one with the
problem.
