It will, we need to understand that most people have very limited capacity to expend energy on these matters. They'll pick private, over not private, some will even pay more for it, but it needs to be a clear proposition, and the private mustn't impose some other cost, such as cognitive complexity, at least not disproportionate to the benefit. > Interesting. There are difficult trade offs, whilst I'm sure Google make available everyone's data to warranted searches, and use it to make money for Alphabet, they also have an exceptionally good security record in their core apps, and a good set of security features. So whilst it may not be freedom respecting, I can see a lot of business value in going Google (or Apple for different values). Individuals and businesses have to make choices, but sometimes I think it is easy, where applications are both easy to use, and reasonably respecting of freedom. So whilst browser choice is hard, choosing say Chromium over Chrome is easy. I'm actually using Brave currently on personal computer, not sure I'd recommend it yet, I think the usability impact for the privacy is still a little high for most people, but there are some subtle security wins too, but even that is hard as it is sometimes also chasing Chromium for some security features. > It is very worrying that school pupils are not being taught about > privacy online. But then, no government wants that. The government contrariwise does want its own systems robustly protected, so there is some suitable training around. But I don't think any of this will be mainstream, not least there isn't the time, and hopefully the Internet will have moved on further by the time the kids are usefully contributing to it. -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dcglug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
