There is a place for properly implemented 'snap' like things or "AppImages".On 29/07/2019 15:01, Adrian Midgley wrote:I have a lash-up for printing photographs via Gimp and the Gutenprint system on an old Mac. I'd rather do it off Ubuntu, the current LTS, 18.04 Bionic. I can install the later better Gimp 2.10.12 using Snap, but not with the PPA - version conflicts probably dating back to me using Gimp 2.9 I can't install gutenprint-gimp because Gimp is a dependency and it doesn't see the snapped installation. And the gimp-gutenprint plugin is not in the snaplist.Snaps are a great idea poorly implemented for just such reasons as this: kick them all of your system immediately and purge snapd if you like sanity. Using this PPA? https://launchpad.net/~otto-kesselgulasch/+archive/ubuntu/gimp I always use that one on top of 18.04 and it's working fine for me. After purging the snap versions if the install from PPA is still failing on version conflicts, well, just fix it then. Obviously. I just installed gimp-gutenprint ok - it pulled the 18.04 packages. When you say "old Mac", how old are we talking? Unless you're keeping it around for sentimental reasons you should toss that piece of crap and virtualize one for Apple 'stuff' going forward surely. Cheers I had a crash with a KDE program inside XFCE on openSUSE after an openSUSE update, but it worked on KDE desktop (which I loaded and checked) which I do not normally use and then lodged a bug report. After a lot of work, the team got an inkling of why. Sending me an AppImage (built on different libraries) to try. It worked. I used this while the developers and maintainers updated the source repositories in official updates. So there is a place for some 'locked self contained programs' as in that AppImage. -- Regards Eion MacDonald |
