I have been look around the internet and, as usual, have finished up very confused. Please though, do not suggest vi or vim.OK. Emacs is it, then.
I knew I should have included that in my no no list.
I did think of that one, and found that it was already automatically installed. I will have a proper look at it.I have considered kate, but that is really for KDE and I am using MX Linux which is based on Debian. I have also looked at jedit, but that is much too involved for what I want, just a simple text editor, with a spell check. Why have an editor encumbered with a built-in spell chequer? What about one that can call one (of a number) or spiel checkers?Sounds like you want nano. (Ctrl-T invokes the sleep chucker) Gordon
