Please explain your reasoning - I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just a bit weird that little old Firefox is dragging your decently specced laptop to a literal thermal shutdown all by itself. 'Cos I look after many, many systems with lower specs than that across multiple platforms and none of them die a fiery thermodynamic death when the user starts up Firefox. Tried creating a temporary clean Firefox profile? Just how many tabs do you normally have open and what extensions/addons might you be using? So I wondered if a) > there is an equivalent to what I remember in the distant past on Windoze > was ZONE ALARM which flagged internet/network use and asked if you > required to block it? (so I can decide what goes in/out) Not on Linux that is worth using (there have been many attempts). Mac has Lulu and LittleSnitch, Windows has lots and lots of these and they all suck. End users generally aren't qualified enough to understand what these blunt tools are telling them or how to fix things when they accidentally stop "that pointless UDP traffic on port 53" for example. Linux does have a staggering powerful network stack that can do basically anything though if you don't mind spending the effort learning its toolset - what you want is iptables but you'll spend the rest of your life learning it. and b) (yawn) > suggestions for a functional, user friendly browser that doesn't munch > cpu and memory and still will still allow easy access to things like > online banking, but allow me to bock ads, tracking etc. You're already using it - sort Firefox out (if it's even causing the problem in the first place) rather than throwing the baby out with the bathwater and jumping to some other random crappy software! That being said Vivaldi and Opera are the only sane alternatives if you just fancy trying something different - avoid Chrome at all costs. > Specs for my laptop are... You _really_ want to be reading logs and figuring out exactly what is actually the problem here rather than considering new browser choices because you've already decided Firefox is the culprit. Cheers PS: Actually a quick check turned up this which does look considerably less half-arsed than I was expecting: https://www.opensnitch.io I still wouldn't use it personally, let alone give any access to it to a user without thorough networking skills, but it looks a lot less rough than previous attempts I guess? -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG https://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
