I mostly use mutt for a quick browse of my emails, but generally use GNUS in Emacs for most email correspondence. GNUS also has NNTP support, which I use in conjunction with Leafnode[0]. Sadly, Leafnode seems to be rather stagnated right now, although I hear they're working on Leafnode v2... ah well.
