Hi Paul,Thanks for that. I tried Mint 18.3 with a 4Gb stick but it siad minimum space required 5.6Gb - possibly a new standard. I had an 8Gb stick free so I installed on that and it works fine.

Ah, makes sense, maybe it is better for new users to be presented with a front end that closely matches what they are used to, menu in bottom corner (for windows) and a icon bar thing for mac users, which can be replicated on linux too or something similar. With mint you can download either LMDE (mint debian) Cinnamon or Mate, so they work out at < 4gb.
