We had a good meeting, in fact there were six of us in total which is some sort of record for us.I know it's not my computer and I'm of course not going to this meeting but... MJE is a long time Gentoo user and anyone who can put up with that is pretty much a dead cert for a quick BIOS tweak like this Neil. I remember you saying that it was a pain getting all the cables plugged in for your desktop but if you take a couple of decent well-lit phone camera pics of the back first (you could even label up the cables and ports if you're feeling super-organised) and then sling your box in the car for the meeting, I estimate that it will probably take him all of about 2 minutes tops to sort it for you. Especially as he's even prepared to bring along all the peripherals as well! It's funny to vouch for someone I've never met but MJE obviously knows what he's doing to be fair. As long as you can handle plugging the thing back in once you get it home it sounds like a win to me. Cheers Your friend as always, "Big Apple"
Michael came to my house afterwards to look at my computer. We agreed that, as it stands now, there is no way to get to the BIOS in time since it boots very quickly. I suspect that fast boot is enabled. Could not think of any way round that at the moment.
I have had a look around the internet and it seems that this is quite a common problem. Various suggestions are there, and the main one seems to be to clear the CMOS. There is a button on the tower to do this so I don't even need to remove any panels. This supposedly will return the BIOS settings to their defaults and will also let be get at them from log on.
Meanwhile the people at the local computer shop have offered to have a look for me if I take the tower to the shop. They seemed confident that they could solve it.
Still looking around at various options before deciding what to do. Meanwhile am backing up my home folder completely.
