Thanks for the advice. Installed Lubuntu and found that it has installed the necessary drivers to get the wifi working!

Trying to install Mint Cinnamon and I get this output:

I have a Lubuntu multiuser machine (that was the initial install) and that has xubuntu/kde/unity and other desktops loaded as per others desire. You can switch desktops at will to see what you like without a full install.
