Thanks for the advice. Did that and now the system won't boot. I get a flashing underscore and then nothing. I can't boot into safe mode but not sure what to do next. I also have a USB stick with Ubuntu 16.04 on it.

Ah, if you're sure you no longer want the kubuntu stuff fully get rid of
it with:
sudo apt purge kubuntu-desktop
sudo apt autoremove
sudo reboot
Kubuntu will have loaded all kinds of stuff that potentially clashes
with the straight ubuntu stuff, including quite probably switching over
your greeter. See where that gets you and report back.
