Re: [LUG] Best free software webmail client

Hi

Zimbra is a massive groupware thing. The learning curve is massive and when it broke, removing our ability to access email for our organisation, two experienced linux admins couldn't fix it. It's not a fun position to be in and one I don't recommend you work towards!

Not sure exactly what you want to do, Simon - obviously you know about Roundcube and Squirrelmail, but you say no webmail and they sit on top of local delivery.Â

If you want control and to self-host for your relatives: Standard linux mail stuff - debian /Âexim4 / Âdovecot (spamassassin and clamav and a Âlot of time tweaking them) is a well tried solution. Give them roundcube or set them up with Thunderbird. (I think all mail clients are essentially bad, but TB is probably the least bad)

If you want ease - then I'm a bit fan of gmail. Others dislike trusting email elsewhere but it works and is hassle free. (Web interface or not)

For the user base you mention, you're unlikely to do better than a simple free email provider like gmail, outlook etc. That would be my first (and only) offering. Gone are the days I enjoy messing around with mail servers and forever adjusting spam rules. Gmail just works and deals well with spam and viruses - if you can let go of control...

Time to move email.

Thinking lose the web interface entirely, or perhaps provide it via x509 client certificates, if I do what's best?Â

Best I've seen is Zimbra, but I hate their delivery. Any others I should try...

User base is relatives who can't configure mail clients, so easy to use is good.
