I tend to run a clean mainline linux kernel build using patches collected by the current author of the official Debian Beaglebone images, a chap called Robert Nelson. His pages at https://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/Home have been invaluable in getting my ARM boards running, and his presence on IRC and replies by email have been most helpful if I've got stuck! I've never got to grips with Android, either as a user or a coder - just can't see the point if I've got linux underneath and I know what to do with it. Pity this doesn't apply with my phone, which does seem riddled with bugs :(. There are always going to be bugs, and device drivers for ARM peripherals are often under extensive overhaul and development, and because of their embedded nature don't get quite the same attention as their desktop brothers and sisters. Non-the-less, the community (and not least the efforts of such projects as the Pi and Beagle Foundations) have often focussed chip vendors into getting their drivers and documentation up to scratch so that they are usable to the maximum audience.
