TXT messages get through to UK geographic numbers just fine. (Providing you use a quality telephone company and I include BT retail here)
Mine get emailed to me. BTs can be spoken to you or can appear as text on a suitable phone - e.g. a lot of DECT phones support it and some can send too.
Its a shame some companies restrict this to 07[1-9]* numbers. Mostly due to their own ignorance though, but persuading them otherwise is a near mammoth task.
