Yes, this is so true - my favourite one, the chessboard model, is an uncannily perfect fit for 17" laptops... so perfect that just as you said, it actually restricts the airflow. I nearly killed a customers 17" MacBook with thermal shock before I figured that out. The kitten models are all happily a bit bigger. Sometimes low tech solutions really are the best.
