I have worked at the Royal Cornwall Museum and digital photography was used for prints and documents. Fragile documents can be damaged by handling turning over and putting on photocopier as well as potential light damage but once wouldn't cause dramatic light damage which why we had a policy of doing one high res scan and then using acid free storage medium. The worst damage I have seen was from plastic folders or plastic pages onto thin card when heat can weld the whole lot together and wrinkle it. Use a good resolution digital camera on a tripod with and image stablised lens if you have one and a remote for the camera avoids shake If you need some doing I can help as I often photograph documents at the Record Office for Clients. I have just done some Arundel papers dated in the 1400's Rob Cook www.
