Does this help? http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2163328It's been a while since I did my upgrade (back in 2012) but I do remember having similar problems with it not booting after the install. I don't remember the actual cause either but I do remember that I used a Grub repair disk to reinstall Grub and that fixed it.
