It's all well and good restricting internet access at home but what about when your kids go to friends, relatives etc houses and use their internet?

In my kids case they have access to at least 3 Wi-Fi networks that I know about (okay two of them I can potentially setup some blocking as they're my parents networks), but they could be using Wi-Fi at their friends houses too and I don't know what choices their friends parents have made about blocking, so the education and trust thing works for me.

That's not what I meant.  Not clear from what I said, I agree.  However,
from other messages, I hope it became clear that education holds the
key.  If that fails though, well, you /could/ try locking 'em up for a
week or two.   :-)
