Adding more coaches isn't always an option as the trains will no longer fit alongside the platforms at all stations. Extending platforms isn't an option, especially in urban stations. So, as demand for rail use goes up the ticket price can be increased because more people are prepared to pay higher prices to be able to use the train. At the same time, other people decide to stop using the train because the price has got too high. There are, of course, other factors involved, making the price calculation no where near as simple as it seems from the aforesaid. It's all about supply & demand. Remember what happened to the price of potatoes last year? It rocketed because farmers were only pulling six or so tons a day out of the ground, rather than the usual four tons an hour(1). I suspect the price will rise again this year because the ground will be too wet (under water?), and not conducive to a good growing season. (1) At least, those are the figures for my local potato farmer. -- Regards _ / ) "The blindingly obvious is / _)rad never immediately apparent" Black man got a lot of problems, but he don't mind throwing a brick White Riot - The Clash
