Although I did, briefly, think that the latest drivers to arrive in Debian testing had broken things. It turned out that, in fact, the on board GFX hardware had gone flaky(1). Putting in a spare card I had rectified the situation. (1) Probably stared at the time we suffered a lightning strike here, and lost a certain amount of electronic equipment. It's just that the latest driver was the first that pushed the GFX chip set hard enough to show the problem.
