Sorry I'm a little late to this thread, but doesn't Banshee work with the IPhone 4/s? I know it didn't before, but I think the latest versions of libgpod-sharp can handle that phone. It's a simple solution to check out.

You can update an IOS device independently of Itunes via Settings,
software update. I listen to music via Spotify or the BBC radio App.

I'm Itunes free and I love my Iphone despite everything. :)
