Coming from Botswana, where they have proper this-is-the-end-of-the-
world thunderstorms, and watching a bunch of equipment go bang with
massive blue, red and green sparks in a suddenly darkened room, taught
me this invaluable lesson: your kit doesn't have to have lightning-
proof connectors, it just has to have less-lightning-friendly
connections than your neighbors. The lightning will go where it's made
to feel least unwelcome. Now I never have fewer than two layers of
surge protection, and I laugh at paltry British storms.
