I think maybe with some of these projects, the folks getting the IT kit really should be prepared to fund at least getting some of the kit, especially if we're giving up our time for free.
Sure we may have spare old bits kicking around, but if we don't and they need something, well they'll just have to budget for it.
A quick look on ebay suggests 17" LCD monitors are going for anything from £10 up to about £40, some with free delivery, here's one as an example:
