MPs can and do get things done, knock heads together, scare the officious deadwood jobsworth into action, stop the malicious and spiteful jack-in-office in their tracks, etc. (Councillors can be good at this too). They can be scared/influenced by the thought of losing their seat. They can also be smug, arrogant, insolent, negligent, casual, tribal, complacent, cynical, entitled, venal, opportunistic, lobby-fodder, antagonistic. (We call that kind "Tory") (Just kidding) (No I'm not) (Well, there are exceptions) (Not many) (Not enough).
The crucial *other* point of writing to them is that their response, or refusal to respond, is good ammunition to use against either them or their opponents come election time, depending on whether you support or oppose them, and on whether they have supported or opposed you.
