This is why I always tell people that trying to claw back the "windows tax" is a complete waste of time, both financially and in terms of expended effort. Backup the license and resell it on the grey market if you like, or just keep it for when you inevitably need a valid Windows license for something. For those who insist on doing it on principle, fair enough, no problem and good luck to you. Conflated with the issue that buying machines without windows pre-installed rarely saves you money and often actually costs more, frequently limits your choice to a small selection of models or an even smaller selection of specialist suppliers and you've got to start wondering if it's really worth it. Pro tip: it's not. Server/workstation land is a totally different matter, but for home machines and laptops, just save yourself the effort and buy whatever you like, windows pre-installed or not.
