With SATA ports it really doesn't matter which connector you hook your drives up to, although for sanity's sake it's often best to actually connect your 1st HDD to SATA 1, etc. You've only got one SATA HDD attached so I wouldn't bother moving it personally. You could have left your DVD connected to either IDE slot to be honest, but again for neatness, I would have moved it to IDE 1 as well. Obviously your old DVD drive was a SATA one - I'd yank the cable for that and keep it in the spares box. It's probably best to minimise random unconnected leads inside the case where possible. > So finally, there are two audio ports on the new drive, but I cannot > see any cable to attach to either. Will I need to get one? No, as Grant said, that's just an old-school legacy thing which you definitely don't need anymore (or for the last 15 years really). Any sound data will just be extracted digitally through the normal bus along with the rest of the content from the DVD. It's funny, even brand new DVDs to this day still have those old audio ports on the back. Does anyone know if PC BluRay units have them as well? It would be hilarious if they did... Grant's word of warning about potential weirdness deriving from the hideous old dual dichotomies of Master/Slave and Primary/Secondary on IDE channels is a good one too: I've seen that many times as well so bear it in mind just in case things don't work as expected or if the DVD mysteriously refuses to show up in the BIOS or function at all once connected. To be fair, as he said, it was a crappy old box he saw that on and all the instances I ran into it were now a long, long time ago and on similarly aged old bangers. Relatively speaking, your ASRock modern is positively modern compared and I very seriously doubt it will have the same problem. Additionally, you've only got a single DVD hooked up on either IDE channel and your HDD is on SATA instead (plus we have proper device-by-UUID now) so it's not really going to be an issue. So, when dealing with IDE interfaces the rule of thumb is always jumper everything for cable select (it was specifically designed to ease this exact problem) by default, and only revert to manually jumpering to Master/Slave if it fails. So, did you decide what you're actually going to install on this box once you've finished hooking up the new DVD? Windows 8?
