[LUG] Sending emails

My daughter contacted me about emails on her laptop. She said she could 
receive emails but not send them. I asked her to bring her laptop over 
for me to check and to see the error messages. She did so earlier today. 
When I tested it out it worked perfectly, so no error messages.

The only thing I noticed is that the outgoing server her laptop was set 
to use port 587, which I believe is the default. On all our computers 
here we are set up for port 25. So I have changed that in her computer 
and will wait to see what happens when she tests it this evening.

Meanwhile, just out of interest, is there any significance in which port 
is set up? I don't really understand what difference it would make, but 
then why would there be a choice set up otherwise?

Can anyone enlighten me please?
