As someone else pointed out, the very first three of the reviews include instructions to get it working with a Raspberry Pi. So it obviously does work. You are right that normally, digital to analogue conversion either way has typically needed a converter box and they are frequently expensive. But it sounds like if possible, you want to revisit your similar problem and this time don't buy a simple lead like it, just actually buy one of these instead.
