Just completed my first tests.We bought one of these in the end [http://www.rfsolutions.co.uk/acatalog/info_GSM100EVO_LITE.html] as it plugged into a proper COM port.
Gordon's suggestion of using the smstools packaged worked well. Install was straight forward, I just had to set the correct baud rate in the config and away we went!
Messages are sent by placing specially crafted text files into a spool directory monitored by smstools' smsd daemon. Easy to code in PHP. Awesome.
