Isn't it true that data recovery on encrypted drives/partitions is much, much harder? Given that, is it then worth considering the trade off you might be making between security and usabilty? Is your hd more likely to be stolen (laptop vs pc) than you might one day need to perform data recovery of some kind on it (failing disk or recovering deleted files)?

Encrypting is about preventing disclosure, it is not the same thing as
backup.

Sure. I was merely responding to your suggestion that OSes "spew user
data into too many places" which I don't think is true, at least not
for Linux.

Your arguments for encrypting the whole disk are very good of course.
