Just a thought as for cable perhaps for making up short lengths the enginners could leave us any off cuts or left over cable, we can get ends easy enough it would be a great opportunity to teach people how to make up cables, etcCable for patch leads has a stranded core. That for IDC connectors (patch panels and sockets) has a solid core. Trying to fit crimp connectors to solid core cable is hard work, unlikely to work reliably and can even result in damage to sockets/network interfaces.
FWIW: I've always made up patch leads with solid core cat5e cable. All the commercial patch leads I've had to cut an end of to remake have had solid core too.
I don't think I've never seen multi strand cat5e cable...Maybe we're talking about something different, but this is the cable I use for both wiring into punch-down sockets and making up patch/extension leads:

As someone who's made up dozens, if not 100's of patch leads over the years, I'd strongly suggest buying them in (they're under £1/meter). I've got the kit & connectors, but rarely make one up these days unless it's a weird length or something really has to be neat and tidy or a cross-over (Gah, had to actually make up a real cross over cable this week for a stupid cisco router that didn't do auto cross over!!!)
