I have run a 350mhz AMD box with 4 nicks and a 20gb hd as a firewall server (Smoothwall), and currently run a 2.8ghz AMD Athlon box hosting a "security server" (3 cctv cameras), a "Wiki" (mediawiki), web-server (Apache) and an FTP server. I also have an old 2.3ghz box that I use as a central file server and back up server for my network of 9 pc's. My web server will be used soon to help me learn Php and on my todo list is setting up an email server. If you have a decent multi core pc you can run a linux server in VM for testing and learning.
