Based on that and everything below, I'd suggest there is no packet loss..So the network/LAN appears to be OK. The issue might then be the NAS not actually being able to supply the files - see Simons earlier reply, or some other issue, possibly with the virgin "super" hub thingy...
Unlikely to be the hub thingy, but you can eliminate that with a 2nd Gb Ethernet switch but given your situation that might be as tricky as connecting your Laptop directly to the NAS...
