Not my experience. In fact, if the server doesn't use virtual hosts, you may visit the website by entering the server's IP address and forget about the hosts file altogether. I should have added to my previous email that it's best to apply caution when using /etc/hosts for non-local IP addresses. I've seen several cases where someone (me, for instance) had made a change there which caused problems later on, long after the change was needed, when no one thought of the hosts file any more.
