I'm thinking of renting a virtual server to run a few low-traffic websites and possibly to run a mail server for the corresponding domains. I know how to run Apache and Postfix. I know how to run a Linux server in general. But I don't have a good idea about what to look out for: how much bandwidth one needs, which hosting companies to consider and which ones to avoid, and if is there anything else I may not have thought of. Any suggestions?
Bytemark gets good reviews (and I think have a list presence ;-) But there are many others. The b/w you need really depends on what you doing - a few personal websites and it's minimal - until it gets really popular :) For example my projects website (https://projects.drogon.net/ ) has shipped 1.7GB this month... which might seem a lot, but 1.7Gb/month is peanuts for any hosting plan these days.
Then there's the other side to consider - the avalable disk and cpu b/w. got a really really busy sql application... or a highly cpu intensive application? But again, your average small website or 2 really isn't doing to show up on the radar at all.
And we used to do all this on DX4/100's with slow IDE diks... Gordon -- The Mailing List for the Devon & Cornwall LUG http://mailman.dclug.org.uk/listinfo/list FAQ: http://www.dcglug.org.uk/listfaq
