Dear DC Lug Members I have been a member of DC Lug for over 10 years, and in the early years I was a very active member of the group. For various reasons I have been quiet for a few years, I have always been incredibly passionate about Free Software, and Open Source. I find myself with a little more time available, and a yearning desire to see the uptake of GNU/Linux grow. With this in mind I have decided to setup Exeter.lug.org.uk. The first thing to say is that this Exeter based group is not Mutex to DCLug. The second thing to say is that this in no way suggests, or indeed hints that DCLug is in some way lacking., I think DCLug is awesome. I see an opportunity in Exeter, with such a concentrated population, it's Uni, and College and I believe that there is now enough uptake of GNU/Linux to warrant a dedicated local group. In fact I think that this might be true for Plymouth, and Taunton also. Although, I won't be having anything to do with those groups other than perhaps to visit occasionally in support, should someone wish to set them up I have once again arranged with the Exwick Community centre to allow us to use the building ( Full use this time, Hall, IT Suite, and Training Room) for a monthly meet. Exeter LUG will meet on the Second Friday of the month, from 7pm - 10:30pm I want to also give a mention to the Awesome Rob Beard, who worked really hard to put together the hardware and systems for the Ubuntu LTSP server that runs the 6 workstation IT Suite, and without which there would be no systems or wireless there. The Wireless is available FOC, and there are also 4 Linux Mint laptops with wireless support that can also be utilised. The training room is available, for presentations of any kind and we have access to a projector, and an Ubuntu laptop (All you need is a USB Key with your slides on). Please make arrangements with me in advance, so I can make sure you'll have everything you need. In the main hall there is a kitchen, and I am hoping to find a kindly volunteer to take care of making and serving Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate. The main hall is huge, and I'PCsure there's loads of possibilities that we can use it for. I will be advertising the group as open to ANYONE with an interest and enthusiasm for computing and IT The next upcoming meetings are Fri 11th May Fri 8th June Let the flame war commence ;-/ Regards and Best Wishes Rick Timmis Abazander Ltd Sent from my Dragon 32
I wouldn't say it's that controversial, if anything it could be good for folks in Exeter who are making the switch. Considering Steam is coming to Linux and Windows 8 is coming out later this year there could be potentially more PC gamers looking to make the switch to Linux and there are possibly interested students from Exeter College and Exeter University and possibly even some of the schools in the Exeter area (and surrounding area).
I'll probably pop along to the odd meeting. Being on a Friday night I can't make every one as I'd have to make childcare arrangements, but I'm sure I can make the odd one or two every so often.
