I'd say use one of the more lightweight WMs. I've got an Asus
eee with similar specs running Fedora - it is a little slow so
I'm looking to replace the OS with one that uses XFCE or LXDE
when I get a chance.

How about Xubuntu or even Lubuntu? (the 12.04 beta versions run
extremely well). Both are lightweight, based on XFCE and LXDE
respectively, plus you have the added benefit of latest software and
kernel.
Have run both on my netbook without problems.
