Re: [LUG] IPv6, ADSL and FTTC

Hi,

I've just discovered that my broadband connection supports IPv6, but my ADSL modem/router doesn't. I would like to get a new router that does support IPv6, but given that FTTC is coming to our exchange soon-ish, I figured it would probably be better to get a separate router and ADSL modem so I could keep the router when I switch to FTTC.

Your using Entanet by the looks of things.. Have they actually enabled it in your line? If not, then be prepared for a wait... Depite all their advertising and bullshit about being fully IPv6 enabled, actually getting it from them is sometimes problematic. It took me a few months and I know their chief techie!

I was recently cut-off for about 30 hours because their router and my router (which had been hapilly working for nearly year together with IPv6) decided to disagree - 8 phone calls totalling over an hours later... Entanet took that long to work out the issue and sort things out, going to BT and back again, changing passwords, logging in with different users, getting BT to do a re-provision on my line and who knows what else before turning off IPv6 on my line which then caused my router to immediately re-connect. They don't appear to have re-enabled it, and I've given up. I'm probably going to move to AAISP as soon as I can justify the cost of it all - for nothing else than being able to deal with fully trained technical staff and not monkeys reading a script.

I like Entanet - their internal network is good, and I resell their services, but this incident and the one last year where I was cut-off for 4 days (after being throttled to 2Mb/sec for a month) is sorely testing my patience with their ability to actually diagnose problems in a timely manner.

Anyway...

Does anyone have any recommendations for an ADSL modem and a separate router with wifi + wired ports that support IPv6, where I can use the router with an FTTC modem?

Draytek vigor 120 modem then a Linux based router - well, it's what I'm using. If you want router inna box, then there are many off the shelf - e.g. the MikroTik range. I understand these are Linux in the core with MicroTiks own front-end.

Another alternative might be a router/modem/wi-fi combo which as a 2nd WAN port (Ethernet) that can do PPPoE, so you move to using that when the ADSL is converted into FTTC with a supplied modem.

There are rumours of 3rd party modems coming out now though.

The Billion BiPak 7800 can be re-flashed with alternative software to support IPv6 natively - it's what AAISP were selling for a while - they've now moved onto something else but I can't find it's make with a quick look. (I have a 7800 with a client which I'm about to re-flash and see how long it takes now to get IPv6 on their line)

I'm happy to flash the firmware using openwrt or similar if that gives me what I need (my current router isn't supported by openwrt).

That might be an easy option if you already have the hardware, however make sure it's up to the job of 100Mb connections - I understand some of the early ones were somewhat throughput limited.
