Actually from experience Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS with LTSP handles different hardware reasonably well picking everything up on machines I tested (couple of laptops, couple of desktops and a Virtual Box virtual machine). But I think you could be right about the BIOS, seems that these days quite a fair few support netbooting but there are still the odd few which don't. I guess times like that it's handy if all the machines are the same or fairly similar.
