Under the default settings it would not pull down the latest version of hplips. Looking back I had many examples of what was going wrong: but turning the printer on and off seemed to fix it. One day it just stopped. After much swearing: upgraded the printer driver (had to download it from the hp website and run the installation as sudo). I promised I would install the next long term release of ubuntu, although I am tempted to go debian / gnome -- Henry Photocopies or faxes of my signature are not binding.
