Does anyone know of a shop open, today, in the South Devon Area that sells 7cm CPU fans CPU is a Athlon 2800 with an aluminium heat sink to which the fan is screwedI have an 8cm one here if you want to pop over.. It might fit on just one corner which might get you going until you can source a proper one... I might have others - I'll have a look.Have you tried cleaning out any dust and fluff, then lifting the foil cover to the bearings and giving them a drop of thin oil?If you're lucky enough to get a fan with real steel bearings!!! These days they are mostly plastic and putting any sort of oil on them is a sure fire way of killing them instantly.
You may find silicon oil safe to use on those plastic/nylon type bearings, the problem is, I believe, the more traditional mineral oils react with and swell up plastics?
You need to make sure the silicone isn't carried in a solvent first - some of the spray ones are...
However, I think it's really best to just throw them away and buy new - preferably spending a few more pennies on one with proper bearings.
The plastic ones I've taken apart in the past have been a metal pin in a plastic bearing - they fail due to wear, or dust getting in and making them wear more. Then they get that classing buzzing/screeching noise as the pin/fan starts to rotate off centre - which only serves to increase wear, etc.
Sadly PCs stopped coming with dust filters when production numbers went up and costs were driven down - mid 80's I suspect... Running PCs in a home environment really is bad for them - worse if there are smokers...
One reason I like fanless... If you've not see it, check these: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/11/13/ventblockers/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/18/ventblockers_2/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/11/26/ventblockers_2/The place I hate going to most is a friend in Bristol who smokes heavilly and runs several PCs in his home/office... His PCs/servers really are disgusting inside )-:
I have one of those portable Dysons - very handy for cleaning the inside of PCs!
