If they're picked up by the V4L side of things, then you should have some new devices listed in /dev/video* (or something like that(.

A couple of ways to test them out: cheese & mplayer

just loaded pinguy 11.04 and loving it,so i plugged in 2 webcams to see what would happen.it picked up both,labtec and some obscure make which i think moses was the last to use.

it recognised both but i cant seem to find them any where on the system,any suggestions where i might look.
